02 CELEBRATION Advertising and Sales: SUHANA CHOUDHRY Digital Manager: Hiren Fatania Immense Media 145-157, St John Street London EC1V 4PY Cover photo by: Press Information Bureau, India EDITOR -in-Chief Issue 04 JUL/AUG/SEP 14 Mr Modi’s handshake with Mr Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, symbolises hope for the peace and prosperity of the region. But will this reflection find a mention in the Independence Day speeches of both the Prime Ministers this August? Meanwhile in London, I am doing my bit. Since there can’t be any summers without desi mangoes and there are none coming from India, I am gorging on the lot from Pakistan. Trust me, they taste just like the Indian mangoes! Myriad sights and sounds of the summer signify hope. Let’s give hope a chance. Love and peace. S ummers in Britain, mostly mild and mellow, never fail to bring back the memories of ‘Indian’ summers to those coming from the Indian sub-continent. Nothing matches its characteristic searing heat, languid afternoons, luscious mangoes and melons, chilled lassis and shakes, the soothing nimbu-pani, sharbats and kulfis. Even though all these summer specialities are available in London 365 days a year, nothing quite feels or tastes the same. This quarter of The Celebrations, therefore, basks in that summer nostalgia as I sulk over the EU ban on Indian mangoes. In India, this summer is saffron-hued just like the colours of the sun at dawn and dusk. The shades are the same but the outcome is antithetical. How this summer eventually turns out for India and the Indians, largely rests with the newly elected Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Damodardas Modi. Mr Modi has brought the right wing BJP to the corridors of power with a massive mandate, but no party has ever before won more than half the Lok Sabha seats with a vote share of just 31%. Once ‘shunned’, Mr Modi is now being embraced by the West too. For the astute heads of states here, business with India is the only business. The recently ‘evolved Modi 2.0’, refrains from making any references to pre-election hard-line rhetoric of Hindutva and and reiterates ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’. Also under the scanner is the fragile Indo-Pak relationship.
