Shiomo’s Problem Shiomo is a math student who gets easily confused. And, fractions frighten him. He is working on really understanding what happens and why when he multiplies and divides with fractions. He says, “When I MULTIPLY 3 x 4 , I get 12, that is MORE than what I started with! ! But, when I MULTIPLY ⅓ x ¼ , I get 1/12, that is LESS than what I started with! Or ⅓ x 4, I get 1 ⅓ , that is LESS than what I started with! ! When I DIVIDE 12 by 3, I get 4, that is LESS than what I started with! ! And when I DIVIDE ⅓ by ¼ , I get 1 ⅓ , that is MORE than what I started with! Or 3 by ¼ , I get 12, that is MORE than what I started with!” !
