Protest is when many people get together to show other people that they strongly disagree or like a concept or event. Poetry is not the only action that people take to protest against something. People use violence, song, starvation, writing letters and obviously writing poetry. Protest poetry is when poetry is used to find faults in current or existing events. Poets protest about events occurring in the world. An example of this is global warming and other environmental issues occurring during the time that the poet wrote their poems. The poets write to change the world. They try and use their poetry to make people do things differently. For example, a poet writing about the environment would want the public to start living differently in order to look after the world. Environmental protest poetry originated from the Industrial Revolution which started in Britain. This was roughly from the mid-1700s to the mid- 1800s. The industrial revolution was very beneficial to hundreds of people but it also led to many problems. The world saw an increase in population which meant that the natural resources were being used up much faster than before. The industrial revolution also cause a lot of pollution. There were so many factories being built which spew out a lot of smog and soot into the air. Forests were also being cut down to accommodate for the factories that were being built so rapidly. Bruce Dawewrites about many different themes including commercialism, sport, politicians, war and it’s effects on everyone, death and love and old age. The themes that I'll be studying include modern living and suburbia. He writes about how the world has changed from how it used to be. Other topics that fall under these themes include urban sprawl , air pollution, genetic engineering, land clearing and forestry. Dawegrew up in a time when there were extremely many things changing on Earth. People changed the way they lived. People started consuming more and he was able to see the change in many peoples lifestyles. He once experienced a world supposedly without global warming, and now lives in that same world where global warming issues appear on international news. Context
