The most noticeable of those is a lay person rather than a Loreto Sister in the Principal’s ofce. After assisting Dr. Elizabeth Hepburn ibvm as her deputy for the last three years, I am honoured to continue the work of the Loreto Sisters at St. Mary’s as Acting Principal. Another change at the College is the refurbishment of the southern half of East Wing. Double rooms for tutors have been transformed into modern ats; student double rooms have become singles; a lift has been installed next to the chapel; and natural light is shining through the corridor more abundantly. The refurbishment meets the needs of a new generation of students, including their digital interface with the global community, without compromise to the aesthetics of the College buildings. Next summer, our fourth consecutive summer of renovations, will see the completion of this ambitious project. The West Wing has not been included in the refurbishments on account of the urgency of the upgrades in the other three wings as well as costs. Yet we are looking to substantially refurbish or even re-build the West Wing in the not too distant future. MOST OF OUR STUDENTS CONTINUE TO COME FROM RURAL VICTORIA AND, APART FROM SEVEN RESIDENTIAL TUTORS, THEY ARE ALL UNDERGRADUATES. Even as we give due attention to capital works, our primary concern remains our current students. This year 44 students—or 28% of our population—are receiving some nancial assistance from the College and its benefactors in the form of scholarships and bursaries. That is quite an achievement for a small College. The majority of our scholarships and bursaries come from you—friends and former students of St. Mary’s College. Thank you for your continuing support of our community! St. Mary’s is one of the few colleges at the University of Melbourne which has not recruited postgraduate students or dedicated building projects to postgraduate accommodation, even though postgraduates now comprise 40% of the student population at Melbourne. Most of our students continue to come from rural Victoria and, apart from seven residential tutors, they are all undergraduates. Today, as the University of Melbourne asserts itself as a global leader in research and innovation, I am especially concerned that rural undergraduate students not be excluded from the rich intellectual life of the campus and the opportunities it creates. At the same time, we impress upon students a broader vision of learning at St. Mary’s in which academic and professional specialisation are but a subset of the education of the whole person. The benets of such an education are not merely to the individual and her professional guild alone, but they benet the wider societies in which our students will live after graduation. I invite you to visit our website where you can update us on any new developments in your life. We—the College staff, but especially the student club—are always eager to hear from those who had passed through St. Mary’s before our time. If you think your professional experiences or personal adventures after College would be of interest to our current students, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about sharing those experiences with us when you next pass through Melbourne. If I do not see you sooner, I look forward to meeting many of you at the annual cocktail party in October.
