Birmingham, UK and Guangzhou, China. St Thomas CE (VA) Primary School was approached by Calthorpe Special School to join an existing partnership between schools in Birmingham and Guangzhou based on their already established link with Guangzhou School for the Blind. Our reputable link with McIntosh Memorial Primary School in Jamaica, is becoming more widely known about with other schools in the city. It was our success in this relationship which prompted Calthorpe to approach us about linking with China. An application to the British Council was successful through their Connecting Classrooms programme and funding was secured for one member of staff from St Thomas CE (VA) Primary School, Starbank Primary School and Calthorpe Special School to visit Guangzhou, China. Governors approved additional funding for one other member of staff from St Thomas CE (VA) Primary School to take part in the trip. The funding for the visit is based on strengthening the existing relationships between the two countries, establishing new one-to-one links and developing a project based on food. The intention is that this will culminate in a cookery book containing recipes written by the children, which reflect the countries that the pupils in each of the schools come from. Calthorpe Special School have visited Guangzhou 15 times before and took the lead in organising the travel, accommodation and itinerary for the visit. The delegation from Birmingham included the Chair of Governors and two class teachers from Calthorpe, the Executive Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher from Starbank and Daniel Lassetter (Headteacher) and Sean O’Neill (Head of Pastoral Care) from St Thomas CE (VA) Primary School. On Friday 8 th November we met the rest of the party at Birmingham airport before a very long journey, via Paris to Guanghzou, China. After 24 hours of travelling, we were met at the airport by a group of staff from the Guangzhou School for the Blind. During the journey from the airport we were given a copy of the itinerary for the week. The very busy itinerary included formal meetings, various dinners, sightseeing, a visit to a Buddhist Temple, a night cruise down the Pearl River and of course, visits to a number of different schools in the area, including kindergarten, primary, secondary and special schools. The visit to our link school, Yinhe Primary School was scheduled for the Thursday afternoon. Various amendments were made to the itinerary including a visit to an additional primary school as Starbank had been partnered with a secondary school and obviously wanted to be linked with a primary school. After a very long and tiring journey we were taken straight to the first event on the itinerary, the pre welcome dinner. In a private dining room in a traditional Chinese restaurant we met the
