A cAdemic The Somerville Group is a new initiative as part of the Malvern St James Aspiration Programme, which will see a group of girls each half of term join Mrs Woodhouse for a Discussion Supper. The purpose is to stimulate the girls’ appetite for intellectual debate. Guests have used their critical thinking and analytical skills to contribute to topics which have ranged from ‘How many animals did Noah take onto the Ark?’ to ‘Lady Gaga and Picasso at Starbucks’. twad h nd h spng tm, h scnc Dpamn hd a numb vn a pa Nanal scnc and engnng Wk. th wa h ya 9 steM Da and h Dagn’ Dn Challng fnal ( paa ), a wll a a Chm Dmnan and h inu Phc Lcu. th la wa n h ubjc ‘th fuu 3D Dpla’ gvn b D J Mah, Pncpal rach a shap’ eupan Laba, oxd. Year 9 STEM Day MSJ students put their science, technology, engineering and maths skills to the test in a one-day challenge set by educational charity, The Smallpeice Trust. The event was designed to enhance students’ aptitude for creative thinking, design and engineering. Forty nine Year 9 students worked on two projects. In the morning, they engaged in the Crash-Proof Vehicle Challenge, where they were tasked with designing and building a vehicle that must hold two eggs and survive a high speed, front impact test at the bottom of a pre-designed test facility. In the afternoon, the students worked on the Propelled Glider Challenge, where they had to design and construct an aeroplane, which could travel furthest through the air. Each project had time constraints, as well as budgetary and aesthetic requirements. Team Sophia comprising Amelia Wrinch, Jennifer Gallagher, Lucy Macaulay, Hermione Crump and Mikun Oluwayemi won the Glider Challenge; and Team Delta comprising Millie Delhanty, Ellie Hickey, Bronwen White, Charlotte Hayman and Kelly Leung won the Vehicle Challenge. Dragons’ Den The Dragons’ Den Challenge Final saw teams Pentagon, PEC6 and Flaming Flamants going head to head to design a car, a business plan and investor pitch. These were presented to our illustrious dragons, Jonathan Wells, Head of Design at Morgan Motors and Andrew Mackenzie, Head of Engineering at Malvern Instruments. We are exceptionally grateful for their input in the earlier stages of the competition as well as the Final itself. All of the teams acquitted themselves marvellously – they had clearly put a huge amount of effort and rigour into their presentations. The winning team was Flaming Flamants, comprised of Year 11 and 12 students Angel Lo, Kimmy Kong, Karen Yung, and Jennifer Zhang. Eight of our Year 10 girls travelled to Birmingham to participate in the Real Business Challenge West Midlands Final against nine other schools. Their mission was to create a presentation, poster, budget, an app and a viral video. The girls narrowly missed the top slot, and came in a very commendable Second. Paige Hunt commented, “It was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience”.
