Queste ultime non sono altro che dei polipi un po appiattiti e capovolti, così da essere completamente libere di muoversi La medusa si differenzia dal polipo, non solo per il fatto di non essere ancorata al suolo, ma anche per la consistenza gelatinosa del corpo costituito da oltre il 90% di acqua. Il diametro della medusa varia dai pochi centimetri sino ai due metri.
