Shea: I have gathered that… you asked the Germ an Bishop to step down because of spending habits I hear? Pope Francis : Well of course I did. He is now in a monastery learning what it means to serve the people again. Like I have said, priests are no better than others. We are here to teach and preach t he word of God. We are here to serve the people of God’s people and we shall do so with humility. Shea: *head shaking in agreement* Your Twitter account has the fair share of press as well. What are your thoughts on that? Pope Francis : Oh yes…Twitter. I rather enjoy…tweeting. Is that the proper word? Yes it is. Tweeting. I find it a good way to connect to people. Social media is powerful and negative most of the time. I am using it as tool of positivity and reaching people. And it’s pretty fun...I didn’t have anything like it growing up. Shea: On to more serious things… you have made open statements on gays and atheists in the church, yes? Tell me about that. Pope Francis: Well as far Atheists go I refuse to cast judgment on them. It is not my place. And last time I checked God saved everyone. All people were redeemed through His great love. It is the great gift He gave us. The salvation part is when one accepts His great gift. As for gays I have said it before, When God looks at a gay person, does He endorse the existence of this person with love or reject and condemn this person? I think we all know the answer to that. God created us all in love. We were all redeemed in love. That should be the focus of the church, not whose is allowed to come into the kingdom. The Church is a house for all. Shea: That is powerful… why are these things just now being addressed in the church. These things are not new things so why now? Pope Francis: Why now? Because these things needed to be addressed to people. It is easy to sweep something under the rug that is controversial and ignore it completely. It is also simple to be able to address the issue but talk around it. What does that accomplish though? Absolutely nothing. It has been done for far too long. Shea : I agree with you completely. Have you received any back lash for these statements? Pope Francis : Of course I have. I can’t say anything without getting back lash. Sarah Palin has openly come out and said I was liberal. When I saw this I just chuckled to myself and thought about how if she only knew Jesus. He was rather liberal for his time too. Pray for my soul if I choose to love before I choose to follow the rules. Shea : Is that a hint of sarcasm I hear in your voice Father?
