MOSAIC 2013-2014 2 Student & Faculty Research MEI supported 6 students or winter and summer research projects related to a variety o policy issues in the Middle East and North Arica this year. • Colin Eide (MPP ’14) traveled to Turkey and Lebanon in January to research the evolving Syrian Kurdish identity. Through interviews and ocus groups, he explored themes that emerged on Syrian Kurdish national aspirations or sel- determination and sel-rule and the perspectives o Syrian Arabs on the Kurdish question. • Sarath Ganji (MPP ’14) went to Qatar in January to conduct eldwork or his research on the labor rights reorms put in motion in advance o the two major world events coming to the Arabian peninsula in the next decade. With the UAE hosting the World Expo in 2020 and Qatar the World Cup in 2022, he examined how both countries could overcome demographic and labor conditions that threaten their human rights obligations. • Shimon Gal Levy (MPP ’14) traveled to Israel in January to meet with members o Israeli think tanks, directors o philanthropic oundations, and key individuals within the economic and political system. His research examined the politics o Jewish philanthropy and the level o attachment amongst dierent generations within the American Jewish community toward the state o Israel. • Delphine O (MPP ’14) traveled to Iran in March to meet with several high-prole Iranian ocials to discuss Iran’s strategic interests in Aghanistan. Looking at Iran’s history o involvement in Aghan aairs, and its cultural and linguistic ties, she also researched how Western powers could work with Iran to achieve desired outcomes in Aghanistan. • Daniel Garrote Sanchez (MPA/ID ’15) spent the summer in Saudi Arabia doing research with the Ministry o Labor to evaluate the Kingdom’s labor market policies and research constraints to employment. • Zeina Shuhaibar (MPP ’14) went to Lebanon in January to conduct research on social and human security in post-confict situations. She ocused on two case studies, Lebanon and Iraq, and examined each population’s access to social benets provided by the state, international organizations, and other local non-state actors.
