T e mayor chose not to attend the meeting at which the UBCM resolution was put orward due to the current Splatsin/CP negotiations. “I expressed the sensitivities o this issue, but they went ahead with the meeting anyway. We opted not to participate because we under- stand our neighbours to the south are engaged in rail discussions, and we mutually agree and understand to keep it in camera or now,” ex- plained Cyr. He went on to say that Enderby will not be a signatory o the UBCM resolution at this time. But Regional District o North Okanagan Area F director Jackie Pearase did attend the meeting and expressed support or the bid to preserve the rail line. “I am supportive o any initiative to maintain the railway as a transportation corridor. I think the Sicamous resolution is an ef ective way to get the issue into the oreront and get people talking about the sense behind the ef ort to retain the corridor or transportation,” said Pearase, who would have liked to see the rail line remain in place and used or rail transpor- tation and commuting between the North and Central Okanagan. T e idea behind the resolution would be that the UBCM would own the line by way o im- posing a province-wide parcel tax, an idea that doesn’t make the most sense to Cyr. “I don’t know that someone living in Spuz- zum would want to pay or something like that here,” said Cyr. When CP o cially discontinued the line earli- er this year, area municipalities were consulted and of ered to purchase the right o way. No buyers stepped orward. For now, it remains a waiting game as to the rail corridor’s uture. Salem Woodrow, CP com- munications, said that CP will advise commu- nities o their plans in the next ew weeks. She assured though that train bridge crossings will remain in place at this time as some residents have expressed saety and liability concerns. “Plans are being nalized on urther work, and this includes ensuring the bridge(s) is sae and secure. No trespassing signs will be posted as this remains private property,” said Woodrow. Others want on board with CP rail line claim Continued from front page ENDERBY/AREA F T e perfect read.
