Rebecca Stoljar Darwin is a very tropical region with a warm to hot climate all year round. There is very little rainfall between May and September (the dry season). The climate influences the whole landscape during the dry season. There is little growth across the long, flat plains. Because there is such little growth, dust storms and willy willys are created. As seen in the movie Australia, due to the drought conditions, water bores and windmill pumps are vital for survival since the people cannot count on rain as a source of water. The movie Australia also depicts the dry season well by showing how the seasons influence the work lives of people living in Darwin. The cattle drovers can only work during the dry season because the climate provides ideal conditions to move a large amount of cattle through the desert. During the wet season, the Drover is unable to drove cattle because of the rain. However, even though the temperature of Darwin is depicted accurately in this movie, there are some flaws which do not resemble reality. For example, a tornado randomly starts when the young boy Nullah calls for it. Tornados do not appear that randomly in Australia and when they do appear, they are very rare. The wet season. During the wet season, Darwin experiences very heavy downpours of rain, thunder storms and tropical cyclones. The majority of rainfall occurs between December and March. The Movie Australia depicts this well. In the movie, once the wet season has begun, there is a noticeable difference across the land’s vegetation. The monsoonal season is very important for animals who are used to surviving in rainforests like the pied imperial-pigeon, the rose-coloured fruit dove and rainbow pitta. During the wet season, rainforests in the Northern Territory provide more fruit than those across the rest of the landscape. These attract flying foxes and fruit-eating pigeons. Source 1.2 outlines how there is the most rainfall on the coast of Darwin and it gradually decreases further inland. This source was recorded over the wet season from 1 st October 2013 to 30 th April 2014. In the movie Australia, once the wet season starts, there is immediate rain and storms. However it is not cold since the wet season is during the Australia summer. The change in weather caused much more lush vegetation across the land as opposed to the dry season, in which the harsh dry air causes it to be hot even though it is during the colder months of the year. Source 1.2 This table outlines the average temperatures and precipitation levels over the year in Darwin. As shown, the wet season is during the Australian summer and is when Darwin experiences the most rainfall.
