President’s Message In 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq, Mercy and I vehemently disagreed with that decision. I was at that time accused by a neighbor of being unpatriotic because I did not support the President and therefore did not support the troops. We all know that a few years later most of the country was against the war and believed our invasion was wrong. I asked my neighbor if he thought that the majority of Americans were unpatriotic. I did not get a reply. We lost over 4,500 troops plus many thousands more wounded. I just read that the United States has spent TWO TRILLION dollars on our Iraq adventure. Can you imagine how far that money could have gone if it was spent on the nation’s infrastructure, schools, reducing the deficit, etc.? It is now 2014 and many of the same people who championed our intervention in 2003 are yelling that we left too early and we should once again use our military might to intervene in that country. I guess they feel that two trillion dollars, training the Iraq army, providing them with arms, humvees and other military equipment was not enough. Maybe we should sacrifice more of our young people. President George H.W. Bush explained why he decided it was unwise to invade Iraq in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. He wrote, “Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different and perhaps barren outcome.” Maybe his son should have listened. As I write this, the situation in Iraq becomes more volatile each day. Who knows what the circumstances will be by the time you read this newsletter. My hope is that we will not once again be drawn into a quagmire and more of our young people lost. RON MANDELBAUM ” “ I would like to thank all the indefatigable, intrepid, and indomitable GO Team volunteers for their stellar efforts during the Primary Election. I’m sure that it was entirely due to their efforts that Scott Peters came in first in his primary fight against Carl DeMaio despite spending very little. The Koch Brothers are chocking on all that misspent money that went for naught. Little did they know the power of GO! But let’s not rest on our laurels. This was just a prelude to the November election where the pavement-pounding really counts. I need all of you that helped with the Primary and then some. Anyone who wants to help in September/ October/November, please contact me (bernitt@aol.com) and I’ll begin to whip you into shape. Thanks again, Go Team. You were awesome!
