The whole book is passages of days, and he didn’t tell us real names or places, in fear we would ‘find him.’ So the whole book is telling us his life story and how he feels he doesn’t belong. Charlie’s best friend Michael committed suicide before he could start high school, and Charlie was not distraught, but confused. He didn’t understand why Michael killed himself, instead of talking to him. He does not have a, sort of, filter that many other’s have. He says whatever comes to mind, and that often makes people uncomfortable. Therefore, it is very hard for him to make friends. Until, a group of people in highschool notice hime. Slowly, he finds himself more and more participating in their delinquent-like behavior. It affects him in many ways, but he seems to stay on track. Except for the times when he has existential crises, whenever he remembers bad memories.
