The leadership team of Chessington Evangelical Church comprises the Ministry Team and (non-staff) Elders . The ministry team are members of staff, employed by the church, and are responsible for the day-to-day running of the church. The ministry team are all Elders, with the exception of Annie who is Deacon for Women’s Ministry. The collective Eldership, of staff Elders and non-staff Elders, are charged with the oversight of the church. The Role & Character Qualities of Elders According to the Bible, the church is to be led by qualified elders supported by qualified deacons. Together these two offices make-up our Church Council at CEC. Elders are men who are able to teach, defend biblical doctrine, exercise servant-hearted leadership in the home and church, show hospitality, pray for others, administer church discipline, and many other things. Deacons are both men and women who are called to lead specific ministries, often focusing on practical needs (such as finances, care of assets) or caring for the vulnerable (such as the poor or disabled). The lines between elders and deacons are not always hard and fast and you have New Testament examples of deacons who perform some of the deeds of an elder and vice-versa (e.g. Stephen in Acts 6-7). The qualifications of elders are laid out specifically in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. One of the striking features of these passages is the emphasis placed on character and godliness, rather than gifts and abilities (though these are included). For example, an elder must be: self controlled, gentle, not quick-tempered, faithful, holy, disciplined, not a lover of money, etc. He must have a good standing both within his home environment and also within his workplace and community. An Elder is far from perfect, but through God’s grace he's changing day by day.
