The Salvation Army Project 614, in partnership with The City of Melbourne, the Victoria Police, Metro Trains, relevant industry bodies and venue operators has developed local strategies - to reduce the harm that alcohol can cause to young people in the inner city areas of Melbourne. Youth Street Teams is an innovative response to address the youth binge-drinking culture and its impact on vulnerable people in and around Melbourne. It involves around 20 volunteers over the age of 18, who head out in the city, both on foot and in vehicles, every Friday and Saturday night from 11pm until 5am and connect with vulnerable and intoxicated young people. The model was developed as an alternative approach to policing - utilising young people as volunteers to provide a different engagement method and positive role model for young people. The Program is a multi-faceted approach to ◊ Informyoungabouttheharms associatedwithbingedrinking, ◊ Addresshighriskactivities ◊ Introduceinnovativepreventionand interventionprograms.
