The wet season’s impact on the Sub tropical zones of the Northern Territory. From the film Australia. Is the movie Australia representative of Australia (the country) or is it a Hollywood version of reality? Baz Luhr mann’s film, Australia , contains many Hollywood characteristics in its portrayal of the country and history of Australia. The film includes some authentic depictions of the top end of Australia in the late 1930s and early 1940s, however in general, it portrays Australia in a stereotypical and narrow way, so as to appeal to an overseas and, particularly, an American audience. There are certain aspects of the film which are accurate: the depiction of the climate in parts of the Northern Territory and the portrayal of some of the experiences of Indigenous people during the period. This essay will discuss all of these issues and draw on comparisons with the climate in another Australian region and on the experience of Indigenous Australians today. CLIMATE Northern Australia The continent of Australia is located in the southern and eastern hemispheres. Due to its large size the climate of the country is varied. Australia has six different climatic zones, which are shown in Figure 1 . The film ‘Australia’ does not provide a full picture of the varied climates of the country, as it is set in the north. The Northern Territory has two climate zones, tropical and sub-tropical. The tropical climate zone is located towards the very north of Australia, and includes Darwin and the Kakadu and Katherine regions. The other zone is sub-tropical and it is located in Central Australia, which includes Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. This region is a semi- arid desert environment, with low humidity due to the tropical rains not reaching that far south. In the winter months the nights are fairly cold. The film Australia is set in Northern Australia, on the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, namely in Kununurra and in Darwin. Kununurra is the eastern extremity of the Kimberly Region. A map showing Australia’s climatic zones. McIssac, H. Trethewy, G. Van Zuylen, S.
