I was invited to contribute to the "Elements – An International Magazine of Mineralogy, Geochemistry, and Petrology" periodical by Professor Paul A. Schroeder, Department of Geology at the University of Georgia. His daughter graduated with an Art History degree and took several ceramics classes from me at Macalester College. Finding out that I live and work during the summer in Jingdezhen, the porcelain city of China, he asking if I would write about the origins of Chinese kaolin, a key ingredient in porcelain, for an "Elements" publication focused on kaolin that he was organizing as guest editor. During the summer of 2013, with the help of two Chinese students assisting me in my Jingdezhen studio, we interviewed materials scientist Professor Wu Yi Fan, PhD. During our three hours of questions, answers and translations, he provided me with invaluable information for the article and an interesting perspective to the discovery of porcelain and traditional Chinese medicine. After reviewing a first draft and seeing images I sent of the amazing things being created with Jingdezhen porcelain, the editor invited me to also write about my life in Jingdezhen and how I use the famous porcelain clay in my artwork. This was used in a more personal and less technical section called "Perspective". This flipbook displays the two-page "Perspective" article and Professor Schroeder and my section titled "Kaolin: From Ancient Porcelain to Nanocomposites".
