What if I can’t vote on Election Day? If you are unable to vote on Election Day, you can vote early (also known as absentee voting ). Any registered voter in Iowa may request an absentee ballot through their county auditor. Voters can either register to vote early through the mail or in person. The deadline for this request is Friday before the election. By mail, you must complete an absentee ballot request form and return the original, signed form to your county auditor. The request form does not need to be witnessed or notarized. Where do I go to vote? In the United States, we separate groups to organize voting based on geographic units, or where people live, based on the population. One of these units is called a precinct , which is a voting district. Generally, the area consists of no more than 500 to 1,000 qualified voters. On voting day, voters go to a polling place , which is the place where the voters who live in a precinct actually vote. It is normally located in or near each precinct. How do I register? You may register and vote on election day. To do so, you first must go to the correct polling place for your current address on election day. At the polling place, you must prove both who you (acceptabile ID validations include Iowa nondriver ID card outofstate driver's license or nondriver ID card, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, ID card issued by employer, or a student ID issued by Iowa high school or college are) and where you live (proof of residence includes residential lease, utility bill [including a cell phone bill], bank statements, paychecks, government checks or other government documents). The best way to do this is with your valid Iowa driver’s license with your current address printed on it.
