Figure 3. : (Drummond, 2001) Figure 4. (Sedimentary Rocks, 2005 - 2014) The Rock Cycle The rock cycle is a natural process which leads to the creation or transformation of the three types of rocks; sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous (see: Figure 1). Through this, new rocks are constantly being formed; igneous rocks are transformed into Sedimentary rocks through erosion, just as they are turned into metamorphic rocks through extreme heat and pressure. Metamorphic rocks into igneous through melting and are turned into sedimentary rocks because of erosion and weathering and sedimentary rocks are transformed into metamorphic rocks through high pressure and heat (Farndon, 2006). The Evidence? (Classroom of the Future, 2005 ) Figure 1. : The Rock Cycle Figure 2.: Unconformtiy Point, Berwickshire (Becky Gould, Paul Gant, Justine Hope, Jane Ladson, Pete Loader, Carl Johnson, Ian Kenyon, Chris King, Mick de Pomerai, Dave Sanderson, Dave Turner., 2012) THIRD EVIDENCE: BRECCIA IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A SEDIMENTARY ROCK BECAUSE YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE IN THIS PICTURE (SEE: FIGURE 4) THE DIFFERENT SEDIMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN COMPRESSED INTO IT. SECOND EVIDENCE: YOU CAN SEE THROUGH THE CRYSTALS IN THE LAYERS OF THIS ROCK THAT IT IS GOOD EVIDENCE OF AN IGNEOUS ROCK (GRANITE) THAT HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A METAMORPHIC ROCK (SEE FIGURE 3). FIRST EVIDENCE: IN 1750, JAMES HUTTON NOTICED THAT THE ROCKS IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA LOOKED ODD (SEE: FIGURE 2) AND THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE THEORY THAT THE LAYERS YOU COULD SEE ONCE MUST HAVE BEEN HORIZONTAL UNTIL THEY WERE UPLIFTED BY NEW ROCK AND SET DIAGONALLY. IT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE THE RE ANY MORE ROCK HAD BEEN ADDED, EVEN SLOWLY, BECAUSE THE OLD ROCK ON THE TOP WAS BEING WASHED AWAY BY THE SEA. MR HUTTON THEN REALISED THAT THIS PROCESS MUST TAKE A VERY LONG TIME TO HAPPEN (BECKY GOULD, PAUL GANT, JUSTINE HOPE, JANE LADSON, PETE LOADER, CARL JOHNSON, IAN KENYON, CHRIS KING, MICK DE POMERAI, DAVE SANDERSON, DAVE TURNER., 2012)
