This referendum was recom- mended by the village finance com- mittee to the Board of Trustees after a long and exhaustive review of the village’s current financial situation. While in reality the village is current- ly in a healthy financial state, it is the concern for the future financial health of the village that caused the Board to place the question of a property tax increase to the residents. If all things remain equal, the level of service and quality of life within the village, the forecast is for the village to deplete its savings in the Five Year Capital Improvement Fund within the next three years. There will be no money for replace- ment of the trucks, plows, salt spreaders, back hoes or mowers for Public Works, no money for replace- ment of squad cars, light bars, radios, computers, or defibrillators for the police department, no money for replacing the roof or siding of the village hall, no money for the upgrade of computer systems, phone systems, heating and cooling and less money for road repairs and improvements. Yes, the village currently has approximately $2.1 million dollars in the bank. But of that $2.1 million there is $970,000 that is specifically reserved for use only in the Water Department and the Sewer Depart- ment. That means the rest of the village operational fees have to be paid with the remaining $1.2 million dollars and the current budget for this year has expenditures of $1.3 million dollars. We are drawing down our reserves and are not putting anything away for the expenses of tomorrow. Continued on next page Stephan K.
