Many years ago, someone wrote a song entitled, "I'm a Dreamer, Aren't We All?" Sure we are! Jesus is telling us that when the dream house or the dream career or the dream retirement or even the happy- family - dream becomes the "living end," it will do nothing to enhance life, and we'll only end up with the same wagon-load of onions we started with. Jesus' first disciples were great dreamers. They were visionaries. They wanted to see the "big picture." And Jesus showed them how to focus on the best of all dreams -- the "one thing needful" for achieving wholeness of life. "Follow Me," Jesus said. "My ultimate goal in life is to do the Will of My Father. Love one another as I have loved you, and your desire for something more out of life will come true. The story is told of a New York City school teacher who decided he needed to see a psychiatrist. Determined to get first-class help, he picked one with a fashionable Park Avenue address. When he entered the beautiful reception room, he found no one in attendance. Then he saw two beautifully paneled doors, labeled "Men" and "Women". He pushed open the door marked "Men" and found himself in a second room with two doors -- one labeled "Introverts" and the other "Extroverts". He entered the door marked "Introverts" and found himself in a third room with two doors. These were designated, "Those Making $100,000 a Year Or More" and "Those Making Less Than $100,000 a Year".He walked through the less-than-$100,000-a-year door and found himself right back on the Park Avenue sidewalk. In our materialistic society, all too often we realize that we are being evaluated by others on the basis of our financial standing. That's a bad state of affairs. But it's even worse to fall into the trap of evaluating ourselves on that basis. Jesus makes this clear to His disciples, saying, No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (Lk. 16:13). Whenever there are people in the world out there who genuinely care about each other, God is being served. Whenever they are compassionate toward each other, God is being served. Whenever they sacrifice for each other, God is being served. When He was about to embark on His public ministry, Jesus was tempted in the desert to choose mammon over God. Jesus chose God and, as God's supremely faithful Servant, He died on the Cross, rose from the dead, and became the Source of our Resurrection Hope. Now, we are being asked to choose. But remember, if you say you have chosen to be God's servant, it is not just a title you have opted for, but a way of life. You have opted for life in Christ. You have chosen to be an apostle of Resurrection Hope in a world shrouded in hopelessness. You have chosen, deep within yourself, to say, "Yes! The gift of God's Love is so good for me, so life-enhancing for me, that I will put my whole being into my response. I will let the Holy Spirit baptize my time, my skills, my feelings, my mind, my body, as I offer them to God through service of others." In God's eyes, we are worth infinitely more than our weight in onions or garlic or gold or diamonds. In God's eyes, we are worth dying for. Jesus, Son of God, came to serve us in this way. As Jesus' disciples, our mission is to see all our sisters and brothers in this world through God's eyes -worth infinitely more than their weight in onions or garlic or gold or diamonds. Our mission, as children of God here at Saint Mary’s, is to serve one another in this light!
