A ew weeks back we had a couple o rough days, where we were struggling to pay our bills, a ew churches would not promote our concerts, and others were talking nega tive about us. On top o this we had some big medical concerns going on within our amily. Friday rolled around and it was movie night in our home. That night I sat down with my wie and kids or our usual routine amily movie night at the end o the week. We cooked up a big kettle o popcorn and got ready to watch a kid’s movie. However, on this night we decided to watch a horse movie called “Secretariat”. As I settled onto the soa with my kids nestled around me I gured I would probably all asleep. As I watched this movie, I ound mysel drawn to the story o this horse and how my lie seemed to parallel the story. This horse was won on a coin toss and there were no great expectations or it. However, as the story progresses Sec retariat starts to win all the races. The trainer, Lucien Lau rin, is a guy who a lot o people have given up on. As Secretariat enters the third year o lie he is projected to be entered into the Triple Crown. A ew weeks beore the Triple Crown races, Secretariat runs in a race with his top competition, a horse called Sham. Sham ends up winning the race and becomes the avorite to win the Kentucky Derby. Most o you know the story. Secretariat goes on to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in record time. However, the Belmont was going to be the hardest o the three races, because o the length. This is the same length race as the one Sham won. As the Belmont starts the two horses take of at a blistering pace and leave the eld be hind them. Many elt Secretariat was going to ade. Then at a little more than halway, Secretariat takes the lead and never looks back. He continues to broaden the distance and ends up winning by 31 lengths and sets a track record. As I watched the movie, two scenes jumped out at me. One where the trainer takes olded up articles rom his wallet, articles about all his losses, and burns them. It re minded me o the new great song by Dara MacLean “Suit cases”. The chorus o the song says “you can’t run when you’re holding suitcases, it’s a new day, throw away your mistakes and open up your heart. Lay down your guard, you don’t have to be afraid” The scene that resonates with me the most is the nal race o Secretariat. I loved watching the horse win in spite o people saying he wouldn’t win and the odds were go ing against him. I recently have elt like that. Were people are gossiping about us, churches are not partnering, and business relationships are ailing. At the nal turn o the race the owner stands up and says “let him run”. I have elt lately that God has been doing the same with me. God has been encouraging me to run the race He has set beore me and I am reminded o God’s words: Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV) Thereore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud o witnesses, let us throw o everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out or us, fxing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perecter o aith. For the joy set beore him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand o the throne o God. Consider him who endured such opposition rom sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. So my prayer or all o us is that we keep our eyes on the nish line, Jesus! That we run the race God has laid out or us and run without abandon. I love the new song by Mat thew West called “Stronger”. The chorus o the song is a great reminder or us all: “ Cause I’m broken, Down to noth- ing, But I’m still holding on to the one thing, You are God and You are strong When I am weak. I can do all things Through Christ who gives me strength, And I don’t have to be Strong enough Strong enough” Jef Wall The Lighthouse Events Founder’s Letter THE BEACON SPOTLIGHT NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2011 2
