The ood News page 2 Should we have a WCS movie night? If you answered “yes”, tell someone on the staff of The Good News . Ebola news spreading at WCS By Sean Li Ebola is a transmissible virus. It’s a kind of zoonosis, which means it can be contracted by both humans and animals. At this time, there are four different Ebola viruses. Currently, the virus is spreading rapidly in West Africa, and it is believed, but not proved, that African fruit bats are the carriers and the reason for the spread. These bats are assumed to be able to spread the virus without being affected. Unfortunately, Ebola has a high risk of death, killing between 25 and 90 percent of those infected. The death rate between these averages is about 50 percent. Symptoms from the virus usually occur three weeks after contracting the virus. These symptoms include fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. Then, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash usually follow; along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. The later symptoms include bleeding both internally and externally. In West Africa, the spreading of the virus is becoming an epidemic. Since February of this year, the first person who was diagnosed and died from the virus was in Guinea. Often times, a person who has died from the virus is taken by family members. It is customary in the West African culture to touch, wash, and bury a loved one who has died. It is this ritual that has helped the spread of this deadly disease. There is good news; the Japanese company, Fujifilm, has a medicine called Avigan which might help abate the symptoms of the virus. It is a drug used against influenza, and appears to be useful in a mouse model of the Ebola disease. A clinical trial is currently planned for Ebola patients in Guinea. The drug has been tried on four patients who subsequently recovered, but this outcome is not statistically significant. If everything goes well, this medicine will be used all over the world in January. 825 Loveville Rd. Hockessin, DE 19707
