The ood News pa e 2 Long long day in China By Sean Li Each year, in China, on September 9, there is an important festival called “The Double Ninth Festival”. The festival got its title from the sound of the word “nine”. It is said that the word, when pronounced, sounds long. Interestingly, the day was not celebrated on September 9, but on October 2 of this year. During this “long, long” day, the Chinese who celebrate this day pray for long life, drink realgar wine, see chrysanthemum, and climb a mountain. Recently, this day has been celebrated as a way to honor senior citizens by meeting at their home, chatting, and helping serve them. Bear takes happy journey to Trenton and Camden By Charlotte Brooks For the first time ever, WCS is having two fall plays! Our director Mrs. Allyson Good has chosen two mini, one act plays: The Bear (1888) by Anton Chekhov, and The Happy Journey To Trenton And Camden (1931) by Thornton Wilder. The Happy Journey is only happy on the surface. Within this tragicomedy lies many layers of family hardships and a deeper meaning about life and learning to just enjoy the ride. Imagine the beautiful scenery of New Jersey in the 1930’s as the Kirby family mime their way from Newark (pronounced “Newerk”, not the one in Delaware) to Trenton. The Bear , aggressive animal name aside, is a much more lighthearted comedy about a beautiful, grief stricken, Russian widow who swears to never leave her house again. She’s determined to be forever in mourning for her regal husband until she's interrupted by a desperate debt collector. Don’t miss the chance to see these wonderful performances on November 6, 7, and 8 at 7 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium . Tickets can be purchased at the door for $12.
