Wednesday, 18 June, 1934 Dear Mr Bean This morning as I was having breakfast, I saw a shocking news on the headlines of The Straits Times: “Eight million died at the end of the Great Famine.” At least one -quarter of the population in Russia starved to death! Since Russia is Daddy’s homeland and there might be a chance that we will move there, I began to research on the cause of the Great Famine as well as Stalin’s dictatorship, as I did not want my family to die of starvation once we moved there. Firstly, I found out that The Great Famine was caused by collectivisation, the merging of small individual farms of the USSR into larger collective farms to aid the Soviet Union in rapid industrialisation. This policy began when Stalin became the supreme leader of the Soviet Union and continued for 6 years. I wonder how the farmers lived with their land and crops controlled by the state. As a result, there was an extreme shortage of food throughout the Soviet Union due to Stalin selling the grain overseas to raise funds for more industrial machinery and development, instead of distributing the stockpiled grain to his citizens. Heartless, isn’t he? In addition, there is also The Great Terror coming up, when Stalin creates a series of campaigns of political repression and purges to eliminate his enemies. This includes purges and show trials, arrests and interrogations of innocent civilians who were suspected of voicing opposition against Stalin, and mass execution of intellectuals, skilled workers and officers. What more does he want after having starved at least 8 million of his people? Killing another 8 million innocent citizens for nothing that they are guilty of? If this continues, Mummy and Daddy would probably be purged too and I would be the only one left. As for me, the education system there wouldn’t benefit me at all! I will not know what the other countries’ side of the story were and the evil things that the Soviet Union did to them as the way that subjects are being taught are strictly controlled by the state. Not only just education, the information that citizens read, see and listen are also under the control of the state. Those who attempted to read, see or listen to information that was not approved were severely punished, most sent to concentration camps where they work till they die. Life would be so boring listening to the same thing over and over again like a broken recorder. Moreover, regardless of your age or family background, there isn’t a single space of privacy left for you. The police there actively encourage people to tell on your neighbours, workers etc. and even your own parents if they whispered something that was against Stalin! This is absurd! Why are they spending their time eavesdropping on people’s conversation instead of doing their job properly of protecting the citizens from harm? I think there is absolutely no freedom in that country. Not having freedom and human rights is a decisive factor for my decision to move to the Soviet Union . Yours, Steffi
