Our Vision and Mission Gramya’s vision is to create a just society, which will provide political, social and economic opportunity for women, especially tribal and dalit women, to support them achieve their rights, to improve their lives and livelihoods and to realize their full potential. We promote child rights with a focus on the girl child. Gramya works with communities to support them in their struggle for survival and development. We work closely with Community Based Organizations, women’s organizations, youth leadership, and like- minded Civil Society Organizations at the local, state, national and international levels to seek justice for marginalized communities. We Are A group of women who are development activists and from the women’s movement for equality. The group consists of Ashima, Jamuna, Kavitha, Suhasini, Usha, Shanti, Suguna and Rukmini. We are made stronger by a dedicated team of volunteers, community leaders and staff, who work towards the achievements of our common objectives. We also draw support from a wide network of women activists and friends. We Work In The lambada tribal hamlets and other villages of Chandampet and Devarkonda mandals of Nalgonda district. The area is semi-arid and extremely under developed with an eroded resource base. Farmers in the area are caught in a debt trap, attempting to grow cash crops such as cotton In spite of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2006, families continue to migrate for five to six months in a year putting at risk their children’s education and health. Mainstreaming Gender Agenda In collaboration with the Indira Kranti Patham, Gramya has extended its activities to the four districts of Nalgonda, Khammam, Warangal and Ranga Reddy. Outreach in 2008-09 was to 280 villages from 28 mandals in the four districts. Together with the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty team, women’s leadership training was provided to 49,945 SHG members. Adolescent girls were provided health and human rights education. The outreach was to 8522 girls. Women suffering due to domestic violence were identified and supported to register cases. 374 women were enabled to deal with their problem. During the campaign conducted by the gender resource persons with support from Gramya, 106 working children were identified and brought back to school. We work in Khammam district in partnership with Jagruthi, Centre for Human Activity in Rural Development, Priya Darshini Seva Mandal, Eco Foundation for Research and Training, Vyavasaya Mariyu Sanghika Abhivrudhi Samstha and Masses. The partnership programme has an outreach to eighty five villages. Gramya has nurtured and supported the Natwan sangham, a Koya tribal women’s membership organization in Khammam district actively promoting women and girl child rights. Bridge School The Residential Bridge School for girls supported by Kirkinactie/ICCO, acts as the centre for Gramya activities. It enrolls working children and girls from extremely poor families. Once the girls are oriented to school, they are enrolled in government hostels providing free boarding and education. Currently 125 girls are registered in the school from 53 villages 17 mandals 4 districts Ranga Reddy (Hyderabad City), Nalgonda, Warangal, Mehaboob Nagar In 2008, 103 girls from the bridge school were mainstreamed into four hostels in Nalgonda district College Education Gramya supports higher education for girls with 18 girls enrolled in college. The Back to Basics Programme With support from Aide-et-Action, we are providing training and other input support to improve the quality of education in 100 primary schools in Chandampet and Devarkonda mandal. The Vidya Volunteers in the school receive regular training to use play way methods to ensure children’s learning. Outreach of the programme is to 2576 children. Preventing Female Infanticide and Dumping of Girl Babies The Government of Andhra Pradesh has introduced a “cradle scheme” in Primary Health Centers with the objective of “saving” the girl child. Unfortunately this leads to devaluing of girl babies with parents dumping new born infants anonymously in the cradles. It also puts pressure on women to turn themselves into baby making machines who are forced to give away girl babies till they have sons. Gramya has campaigned in Devarkonda and Chandampet mandals to prevent this. With Gramya’s intervention the Project Director, DRDA has appointed two women to supervise the cradle in Devarkonda Primary Health Center. As a result, families are counseled to reconsider their decision. Gramya staff are available on a helpline and the organization provides food support for a period of six months to enable families to keep their daughters and choose a contraceptive method to plan their families. With support from Gramya, eight families have resolved to keep their daughters. Dr. Nasreen Hussain, Shakti Shifa Foundation has supported the programme with resources from Cyndi Wiess Women’s Health Initiative. Saluting the country Active learning in school Writing on national issues Promoting food crops Creating legal awareness to access rights Discussing Womens’ rights Campaign for child rights Creating awareness about climate change Training Koya women leaders Ensuring girl child protection Back to basics joyful learning Anti dowry campaign
