Mutant creatures and alien invaders These movies are post war movies which obtained its scare factor form the advances that were being made in technology at this time. The thought of nuclear weapons was enough to scare the general public. The presence of religion also played a part of scaring people as it was completely against what people believed in, however this was the start of the reduction in religion. One of the famous films from this era was ‘invasion of the body snatchers’ which depicted creatures from another plant taking over the bodies and souls of innocent people and how people worked together to combat these invaders. The films of this era were mainly low budget films as the economy was still suffering from the backlash of the war. Ghosts, zombies, Satanism and your family These again were mostly big budget films and at the stage where religion was in decline. this is what increased the fear felt by these particular movies. these films from this particular era focused on the genuine psychological fears that were being felt within society at the time. one of the main themes of this time were children. the most iconic film to come from this era is 'the exorcist'. the films of this time were mainly related to the fact that children can be evil and unwanted. the ghosts seen in this era ia an continuation of the creatures fom the 1950s movies. some examples from this era include 'rosemarys baby' and 'alice sweet alice' Hammer horror Hammer horror is a film production company responsible for such great films like Dracula. Comedian William Hinds was the creator of Hammer horror. This is still present in the ever expanding horror genre in recent films such as ‘let me in’ and ‘woman in black’. However these film were not taken very seriously when they were first released. Video nasties These refer to the films that were banned in the UK cinemas however it was still possible to buy them on tape as censorship was heightened on the films not on the selling of the films. Newspaper ‘the daily mail’ said that these films were ‘a danger to society’ and that the films could influence younger people. Now to comply with censorship parts of certain films were taken out or edited in order to be shown in UK cinema. One of these films (Childs play 3) also were believed to have influenced two ten year old boys to torcher and kill a three year old boy, however this is only a theory and not everyone agrees with this. Slasher movies (body gore)
