The 1987 comedy horror rated R was filmed in the United States and directed by John Schumacher the man behind phantom of the op era and phone booth, nominated for 5 awards and winning 3 this film was followed up by two sequils because of its success Lost Boys: th e tribe and Lost Boys: the thirst. this posters dominate colours are red and black, being a vampire film it fits in with the genre because it is dark, the bold re ds convey power and threat and also the audience will associate the colours of blood and violence, without even watching the film, you can get a sense of what the film is about because traditional stereotypical vampire imagery like fangs, snarling mouths and sinister eyes are used on this poster to show what the character rolls are in the film. Religion and traditional gothic imagery is shown through the crosses and roses, this with the use of black shows ideology of de ath I think that this is a reference to the original ideology of vampire films which are set in the Victorian times, the 1800 century typography follow this idea and also reflects the sharp implements of stakes, teeth or knifes reinforcing violence, I also think that the type being invers ed reminds me of the name tag on a coffin. The tag line for this film is ‘‘sleep all night, party all night, never grow old, never die, it’s fun to be a vampire.’’ I really like this line because even though it may be a bit long to be snappy, but this can be taken in and interpreted in many differen t ways because I think that in a sense it flows with the film, I think that it could show the story line of the film and how it gets worse and t he film gets darker towards the end of the movie, I also think that this tag line is clever because it shows the stereotypes of teenagers. The tagline has an equilibrium and follows the ideology and theory of the Final girl theory, where if the character party’s drink, do drugs or have sex they will die, the disruption of the equilibrium is the last line, ‘it’s fun to be a vampire’ this unusual line doesn’ t fi t in and keeps the audience hooked and I think that it helps to draw you into watching it. I really like the use of colour in this poster because it creates movement and brings the characters to life, The use of blood red isn’t random in this poster, its stencil style splatters make the poster look organic and handmade, I think that this fits in with when the fil m was made, it doesn’t age the film and makes it time less, I think that this appeals to the target audience. This poster is memorable and I think that you can read more into it once you watch the film as you recognise the characters and start to recognise the personalities. The colours in the poster are strategically placed over certain characters to show power and the killers or victims, for exampl e the page is split up by the large main character, all along the left hand side the blood is more dominate and covers the characters faces, sugges ting they are the killers, the ones with who’s faces are white show that they are good, white is traditionall y associated with innocence, the characters body language also show what their character is like, with the majority of them looking straight at the camera, over the shoulder sh ot suggest they are scared or in danger they look defensive and scared, in contrast the villains look scary looking towards the audience and ch aracter, grabbing viewers’ attention and drawing us into the poster. I think that Laura Mucveys theory if that the camera is male, the male gaze theory is shown in this poster, because the female character directly underneath the main focal point being the only one completely covered in blood shows that she is the heroine and is se en as week or delicate, she is the traditional ‘beauty’ in a horror film the love interest that constantly need s saving being the only one covered in blood shows that she might die, or something happens to her also the monster almost secretly creeping in the bottom corner creates a flow through the poster and I think that this links in with the use of the female characters.
