Amendments in the News - Model Paragraphs: Below are two commendable sample paragraphs for the Amendments in the News Booklet. Pay particularly close attention to how the authors have intertwined just the right amount of background information from the news articles, alongside their own understanding of the specific amendments which they have implicated. The First Amendment: MOM REVEALS REASON HER DAUGHTER WAS BANNED FROM WRITING ABOUT GOD IN SCHOOL In Lucy Elementary School of Tennessee, on September 13, 2013, ten year-old Erin Shead was forced to change her essay about God to Michael Jackson. Apparently, her teacher felt uncomfortable around the topic and banned it. Erin’s mother brought this up on media to protect her daughter’s rights. She said “It was so cute and innocent. She talked about how God created the earth and how she’s doing the best she can,” Shead told WREG-TV. “How can you tell this baby, that’s a Christian, what she can say and what she can’t say?” Although the story was not brought up to court, an apology was needed for the resolution of the case. The teacher of Erin broke the first amendment, which allows the full expression of a person’s opinion. In the Bill of Rights, it says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Even though other people choose to express opinions that others do not like, the First Amendment protects them from being stopped. Even in today’s society, the First Amendment has remained a strong right of the citizens.
