2 “There’s not a lot of roe, Pekan. Here, take my part.” Melor, who was already thirteen, sacrificed the delicious fried roe in order to pacify her spoiled little brother. Pekan quickly devoured his sister’s roe. Perhaps it was just too delicio us, or perhaps it was because he was not yet old enough to understand, but Pekan began to whine again and pretended to cry at his sister. “I want more! I want more! Give me the rest of the roe! I want more!” Pekan began to wail , tugging at his sister’s ha nd. “There’s no more! All of the roe is gone. That’s enough now, Pekan, you just finish your rice and gulai . The rest of the roe is for mother. And you heard what mother said – she asked me to keep a little for her for when she comes back,” Melor explained. Unfortunately, Pekan would not be pacified and continued to beg and cry. His wailings became louder and louder and he threw himself upon the kitchen floor, rolling around in tears. Melor tried everything to quiet her younger brother but Pekan was stubbornly inconsolable. Suddenly, he jumped and reached for the roe that her sister had put away. “I got it I’ve got the roe! I’ve got the roe!” Pekan trilled gleefully. “Pekan!” Melor exclaimed. “Don’t eat the roe! I have to keep it for mother,” M elor yelled as she tried to retrieve it from her brother. Her pleadings fell on deaf ears and he greedily at all of the roe that she had carefully put away for their mother. It wasn’t long before their mother returned and Melor quietly prepared the food she had cooked for her. “Where are my mudskipper’s roe, Melor?” Mak Tanjong asked. “I… I… I had put some away for you, mother. But Pekan … he had taken it all. He had even taken mine. I’ve tried to stop him but he wouldn’t listen!” “So … So there isn’t any left even for me?” Mak Tanjong was devastated. Melor became quiet. She felt immensely guilty. She was distraught by her mother’s sad features at not being able to taste the mudskipper’s roe. “I had been dreaming of eating the mudskipper’s roe for so long. Dear God, how my heart pains me … my own children would deny me this small bit of happiness. How could you do this to me? How could you!”
