The three years since I was elected DGN have passed in a flash and the day is now here when I take over the reins of leadership of District 1240 for the next twelve months. I have enjoyed the build up and preparation and the new district team is filled with enthusiasm and raring to go. The team is an excellent mix of experience and new blood and this will ensure a fresh way of moving forward. We are in a period of great change for Rotary where everything is subject to review. Rotary is looking hard at itself to reverse the decline in membership and retention that has occurred over quite a number of years now. The mantra “we have always done it that way so it can’t be changed” will disappear. If your club thinks there is a better way then you can make it happen. You can consider associate members, corporate membership, satellite clubs, friends of Rotary, flexible clubs, change of time and even frequency of meetings; look at costs, look at whether a meal is necessary every week. We have reached the point when realisation is dawning. If we don’t change soon then Rotary is in danger of withering away. We all know about the age profile and this is not confined to Rotary. The same problems exist in churches, other service organisations and even social clubs. The younger generation is hard pressed with work and family commitments and so we have to find alternative ways of accommodating the time they have. Rotary has to be exciting, it has to reflect what we say about it, that we are the people who make a positive difference to so many lives. It is something far beyond a lunch or dinner club although I think the social element - the fellowship - is what distinguishes us from other voluntary organisations so it is important not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I am so looking forward to the club visits when I can get to meet so many club Rotarians and we can share ideas. Sure, I will be telling you about what we hope to achieve as a District but I want to hear what you would like to happen and how the District Team can help. I mentioned at PEPSand District Assembly that I am introducing a District Citation in addition to the RIPresidential Citation, because I want to acknowledge all the efforts of the clubs and I think the Presidential Citation for 2014/15 is too onerous. Hopefully, some clubs will achieve both but I think it important to set realstic goals. When it comes to the projects that RIhas asked us to focus on I could have reprinted DGPeter Dowse’s words from last year because the emphasis is still on membership, raising public awareness of Rotary and eradication of polio. That’s right though because such major initiatives are not just one year options. Change takes time and we can’t chop and change direction every year. Continuity is the key and I would ask you all to be have a plan that will span the next three years and to work together. Peter Dowse did a wonderful job as DG and it is now my privilege to continue where he left off. I have already been greeted warmly at several club events and if I am asked I will gladly attend any event you are promoting, subject, of course, to a clash of dates that may prevent this. So for the next year, begin with renewed vigour and enthusiasm and let us “Light Up Rotary”.
