Fifty years ago, a small group of incredibly dedicated and passionate citizens gathered on the front porch of Lester and Delorra Norris’ home. They set in motion efforts to protect Rookery Bay. What they didn’t realize was they were ignit- ing something so much greater - a conservation legacy that would not only protect that beautiful estuary, but found an organization that would grow and mature to where we stand today. In this issue of UPDATE, we hope to share with you a collection of our recent accomplishments combined with new issues we face in order to prop- erly sustain the future of our local environment and honor the legacy of our founders. We hope, like us, you will be motivated and inspired by our recent successes such as: • The dedication of the Eva Sugden Gomez Environmental Planning Center and Sustainability Courtyard. This ceremony marked the final phase of our extraordinary Nature Center renovation project. • Earning Platinum LEED Certification for the von Arx Wildlife Hospital, a first in Florida and Collier County. • Exceeding our goals for educational outreach, reaching more than 8,000 students from Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties this year. At the same time, we see an acceleration of pressure on our natural resources. Oil exploration has expanded significantly and is being proposed in some of the most sensitive natural areas of Southwest Florida, using extreme drilling techniques that have yet to be proven safe given our unique geology and hydrology. Mining activities in the region, including Collier and Lee counties continue to grow with more proposed large mines currently being considered for permit approvals in or adjacent to environmentally sen- sitive lands. All the while, we see new pressures for residential and commer- cial development pushing farther into the eastern rural lands of our region. In order for us to sustain the future of Southwest Florida’s unique and natu- ral resources – and indeed our own quality of life -- we must continue to be ever vigilant and stay ahead of these fast moving issues and seek a balance between economic development and meaningful conservation. As you read this issue filled with accomplishments, innovations and new challenges, I hope you will be reinvigorated to continue supporting our work to protect our water, land and wildlife in order to protect our future.
