In 1879 the Bishop o Calcutta (now Kolkata) acutely aware o the work to be done among the educated people o the city, appealed to the University o Oxord. In response, ten men outstanding in intellect and spirit met in Canon (later Bishop) King`s room at Christ Church and there the Oxord Mission came into being. It was decided to orm a Brotherhood o the Epiphany: Bishop Charles Gore drew up its Rule. By 1880 the frst Brothers had sailed or Kolkata, to live and work in the city close to the University and its colleges. Some years later, again in response to a call rom the Bishop, Brothers were sent to a rice-growing area east o Kolkata, to care or a neglected group o village Christians. Ten in 1902, because pastoral work could not be carried on by men alone, a Sisterhood (also dedicated to the Epiphany) was ormed at Barisal under the guidance o Fr. Strong. Later branch houses were ormed at Behala, south o Kolkata, under Fr. Douglass, and at Jobarpar, thirty miles north o Barisal. Te partition o India in 1947 resulted in the separation o the Mission work in Kolkata, India, rom that in Barisal and Jobarpar, Bangladesh. Te Brotherhood has come to an end, but in India the work continues under an Administrator appointed by the Bishop o Kolkata, and in Bangladesh under the supervision o the Diocese o Dhaka. At Behala (India) there is a boys` orphanage, St. Joseph’s Primary School, Hostels, the Mathieson Memorial Music Centre and an EN/Eye clinic. At Barisal (Bangladesh), the Mission runs a High School and boarding hostels or boys and girls, St. Anne`s Medical Centre, a girls’ orphanage and a Primary School. In 1970 a Bangladeshi Sisterhood was ounded at Jobarpar, the Christa Sevika Sangha. Te Sisters supervise the girls` hostel and a play-centre or small children, help in St. Gabriel`s School and supervise St. Mary`s Home at Barisal.
