CHAPTER 1 The big picture — the periodic table You will examine: • the kinetic theory of matter • the historical development of atomic theory • the limitations of atomic theory • trends and patterns of properties within the periodic table: atomic number, isotopes, metallic character, chemical reactivity The periodic table arranged as a spiral galaxy. Each circle contains an element and its atomic number. A neutron (n), atomic number 0, is at the centre of the galaxy. Elements with similar chemistry are on the same spoke of the galactic wheel.
