92 For example, to oster a sense o community, the PA has volun- teers call parents o new students to help them with their transi- tion into the Winsor Community. Dinners with the deans, class coees and social events are organized to provide a way or par- ents and students to meet one another and develop closer bonds. The PA also organizes a ormal program during the year at which an invited speaker addresses a particular theme ocused on issues o concern to the community or to the parents o young and teen- age girls. In the past, eatured speakers have included Dr. Howard Gardner, Dr. Eli Newberger, Dr. Sara Lawrence Lightoot, and Dr. Michael Thompson. Finally, volunteers support the school’s regular activities. Par- ents provide snacks and drinks at school sporting events, serve as chaperones on feld trips, community service projects, and at social events such as dances, and support a wide range o school unctions, such as admission open-houses and “back-to-school” evenings. Volunteering Volunteering through the PA is a great way to meet other parents and to contribute to the school in a signifcant way. The range and scope o volunteer opportunities at Winsor are enormous, as shown in the organizational chart on the next page. Time com- mitments can range rom two years (or positions such as PA co-chair or class representative) to as little as an hour or two at a specifc event. The key is to get involved.
