The CYCLOPS Polyphemus APPEARENCE CHARACTERISTICS and POWERS MYTH In greek mythology, the Cyclopes are one-eyed giants. They look monstrous because of their proportions and their single eye in the middle of their forehead. The Cyclopes are simple- minded (=stupid) shepherds but they are savage and dangerous too; they often attack ships passing nearby and eat humans. They are also very strong; they can easily lift and throw huge rocks. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus and his companions arrive in Cyclopes island in search for food. They go into a cave where the Cyclops Polyphemus is keeping his sheep and they become trapped. When the Cyclops discovers them, he starts to eat them one by one. Odysseus offers him very strong wine to get him drunk. While the giant is asleep, Odysseus and his men pierce his single eye with a sharp burning stake. Later on, when Polyphemus has to let his sheep go outside for food, Odysseus and his companions, hidden under the sheep, manage to escape from the blind Cyclops and sail away from the island. Now the Cyclops is furious; he throws huge rocks at the ship and shouts to his father, Poseidon, God of the sea, to take revenge. BIRTH The Cyclopes are the brothers of the Titans but Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon (God of the sea) and Thoosa, a sea nymph. According to the Odyssey the Cyclopes are living in caves on an island that was probably a remote part of Sicily. LOCATION
