2 – DECEMBER 3 TO DECEMBER 16, 2014 NEWS Mum’s the word with Susan Allen A Kiwi Christmas It always seems to creep up on us but Christmas is just around the corner. In case you have missed all the decorations in the shops and ads on TV – Christmas is only a few weeks away. Even though my family and I have spent Christmas in New Zealand for the past eight years it always surprises me that it is Christmas time. Being that I am American, while my husband is Kiwi, I am still learning to associate Christmas with summer. In the USA, Christmas is always cold and if you are lucky it will snow. It is a magical site seeing the forest and streets blanketed in snow and eerily quiet. Part of me will always wish for a snowy Christmas with sledding, hot chocolates, and warm pyjamas. However, the reality is sometimes being trapped indoors with all your relatives, freezing temperatures, digging your car out of a snow drift, power out- ages and nursing a cold. The Kiwi Christmas is very unique. It is more laid-back than the American Christmas. Santa gets to ride a surf board and we get to relax and enjoy spending time with our families in the sunshine, with a glass of bubbly. We have been very fortunate to spend a few Christmases at Whangamata, truly one of the most beautiful places not only in New Zealand but in the world. While there may not be Christmas wreathes on every door, the Pohutukawa trees ‘Star Car’ Driving Up Donations for Charity The Wellington City Mission’s new ‘Star Car’ is off to a roaring start. It’s a small Mission vehicle which has been converted into a mobile billboard and donation facility - equipped with cash donation slots and eftpos machines. Free chocolates gifted by Whittaker’s are being given out to Star Car donors as thanks. As a part of The Mission’s revamped ‘Christmas Star Appeal’, the highly visible car is wrapped in a special ‘Be a Christmas Star’ graphic, and is being parked at locations such as local super- markets, malls and Z Energy Stations throughout Greater Wellington until Christmas Eve. For its first public appearance the Star Car was parked inside Westfield Queensgate Lower Hutt, and had an exceptional response. In the seven days it was there it raised just under $6,000. Aside from cash and eftpos dona- tions, would be donors can text “STAR CAR” to 4847 to make a $3 donation to the appeal. Wellington City Mission Fundraising Manager Robbie Ross says: “We are thrilled with the public’s response to the Star Car, especially in light of the increased difficulty charities have faced over the last few years in trying to raise monetary donations.” The Star Car will also be at the fol- lowing locations through December: The Mission’s annual Street Day collection (5 Dec), the ‘Wellington Santa Parade’ (14 Dec), and at vari- ous Z Energy locations around Greater Wellington (between 9-22 Dec). There may not be a huge turkey for Christmas dinner but the pavlova, is a serious bonus. My children may not get to sled but they get to swim in the ocean and build sandcastles, without their ngers going numb. What’s more I feel a little cheated that we did not have Christmas crackers in America! Ultimately it is really not how you celebrate the holiday; everyone has their own traditions and ways of doing things. What is important is to make the best of the time you have to wind down and enjoy family and friends and not stress about the little things. One of my VERY early Christmases
