WELLINGTON Hearing Care Local views on the Capital Gains Tax The bene t of The Labour Party’s proposed capital gains tax is a question being widely debated; as seen on the televised debate on the 10 th of September. The tax in theory would be on pro t made when selling a property, excluding the immedi- ate family home. It is believed by some that speculation on the housing market has factored into increasing housing prices and that any pro t gained in this approach should be taxed just as typical income would be. However, there is much delib- eration on whether the tax will actually encourage investment in other markets, resolve the housing crisis, or make the tax system fairer. We interviewed several people and asked how they feel about the proposed tax. John Ross, of Professionals Lower Hutt, feels “Labour has not told us enough about their policy to have a feel about the effect it may have. Given that 65% of voters own a home we should have more information so we know what we are voting for or not. The lack of information makes me suspicious that there might be some detail which is not good for owners or tenants.” A lawyer from Porirua special- ising in property law felt “abso- lutely opposed to the tax as taxes are already paid when purchasing a property and feels this would certainly affect the market.” Other residents interviewed, particularly those who are attempting to purchase a rst home, are optimistic about the proposed tax hoping it will make homes more affordable for rst time buyers. It seems that opinions on the tax are largely determined by one’s current nancial status, and whether they have money at stake in property or looking to buy a rst home. It should also be noted that while New Zealand is one of the only developed countries that does not have a capital gains tax, it is a complicated system that other countries have had mixed results with. While the tax definitely will affect those who have more than one property or invest in the housing market it is not clear- cut if the tax will make housing more affordable or deliver the revenue it promises. We are interested in hearing your views about this pro- posed Labour policy. What is your understanding of the policy? Are you for or against a Capital Gains tax? Does this change the way you plan on voting? Send your views to The Editor, PO Box 50102, Porirua; email editor@pcn. co.nz or post a comment on our Facebook page. Gang Show set to please Don’t let the name mislead you, Gang Show is a theatrical production put on by members of the Scout and Guide Movements from the Wellington region. The rst Hutt Valley Gang Show appeared in 1979 in the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt. Organisers were so pleased with the result that they planned another show in 1981. Unfortunately that didn’t tran- spire and the Show went into recess for a number of years. In 1985 a small team got together to launch the second Hutt Valley Gang Show to stage in 1986 and the Show has been staged every two years ever since. Originally the cast was made up only of members of the Scout Movement from the Hutt Valley. Later Guides and Rangers from Pencarrow District were invited to join, and in recent years the Show has involved members of the Scouts and Girl Guiding Movements from throughout the wider Wellington region. The Hutt Valley is now the only surviving Gang Show in the Wellington region. This year’s production, titled The Game, involves a number of items and includes singing, movement, dancing and acting. This year’s cast of 76 and more than 120 ‘behind the scenes’ helpers has been working hard to learn and perfect each item in the programme while decorating sets, gathering props and making the 3,500 cos- tumes needed for the Show. The talented cast are excited to showcase all their hard work so get your tickets today! It’s going to be a great, fun, and enjoyable show for both cast and audience alike.
