What is Protest Poetry? Protest poetry is essentially poetry with the function of finding fault in some current system or issue. It is often centred on social injustice, especially those made by the government or people in power. Although the poetry may be written for multiple aims, such as to invoke a sense of happiness or lamentation in the reader, there must always be a passionate objection to some issue. As opposed to prose, which can often be lengthy and uncommunicative, poetry, due to its plethora of techniques and devices can elegantly, succinctly and passionately convey a point, or expose an issue. Protest poems can be a powerful tool in fighting against public injustices, despite not having the power to cause change by themselves. Through their gripping and influential style of writing, they can often spur others into action by creating awareness of a problem or by giving the public a voice where before they had none. In the words of political activist and Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel, “I swore n ever to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” Where silence is submission, poetry can be the voice of protest, instigating the change in our society
