Q: In that case, how did you get into the business of coaching? A: I was originally a swimmer myself. (Chuckles) In fact I was never very good but I just had a deep, passionate love for the sport. I started swimming as a kid in elementary school and then through junior high and high school. It was in high school that I found my first coaching job as the assistant coach for a local summer league sw im team. I think that’s when I really started considering the job as an option for my permanent future. After high school, I attended UC Irvine and swam for their team while getting a degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, I really missed the sport and the emotions tied in with it, so not long after, I became an assistant coach at a team called the Irvine Novaquatics under one of my great mentors in Dave Salo. Q: So how did you end up at Berkeley from there? A: Well after joining the Novaquatics team in 1999, I was later offered a spot at Auburn University as an assistant coach under the great Dave Marsh. That was around the time coaching became a bit crazy for me. I was starting to work with the absolute best swimmers in the world and before long, Auburn’s male and female teams had each won three national championships. After that I was granted the opportunity to coach for the University of Maryland, and then got my big break with Berkeley in August of 2007. From there all sorts of other things started to happen. I had the amazing opportunity to be a coach for the USA Olympic Team in Beijing and that’s an experience I’ ll never forget. I plan to stay around for as long as I physically can, Berkeley is just the perfect place.
