Preface These poems were written by me from about 18 years of age until 2001 when I collected them into this book. Prior to that I had known that both my Grandfathers had fought in the First World War and had both luckily come back. When visiting Granddad James Lee on the farm I was always puzzled why he would retreat to his den in darkness and sit for hours. Later on I came to realise why as I read more about both wars. Having written poems from school age, these thoughts found expression in poetry as I tried to fathom the emotional stress behind what had happened and how his experiences affected him. Many relatives have been in the Armed Forces and in wars: both Grandfathers, my father-in- law and brother-in-law, cousins, also Tom and Ozzie Osborn. While not having served in the Forces myself, I have read many books on war history and experiences including “ To The Last Ridge ” by W. H. Downing and “ Rooster ” by Bill Game. BETWEEN THE DEVIL’S BEEFTUB AND THE POST AT REDSHAW BURN The archaeologist uncovers mute violence, Digs and scrapes, Carefully tagging harness and breastplate, Mapping glens And Agricola’s meticulous conquest: Antiquity’s clues To the clash of Legionnaire and Caledonian. But centuries did not dent the Frontier; Undaunted and unconquered: Wilderness framed against the curlew’s cry. The sun stretches a hand across the brow Of civilisation. Amid Swirling mists The ghosts of helmeted sentries pass the black watch Like deities; Observe the patient unravelling of science.
