It’s no longer business as usual. We’re moving in a differ- ent direction at First Pres. Many of you came out to the Wednesday night C ASTING THE V ISION sessions in September and now you understand where our church is going and what we have to do to get there. It’s not going to be easy, but if we all work together, I believe God will help us to bring this vision to life. In case you didn’t get a chance to come out, we’ve posted a video of the C ASTING THE V ISION sessions online for you to watch and review. I think we all came away from those visioning sessions with three basic, but important, realities. First, our culture is at a critical juncture. The culture in which we live is no longer conducive to Christianity. American culture is becoming openly hostile towards any reli- gious affiliation, reducing the in- centive to get involved. This means that fewer and fewer people are willing to explore the value religion could bring to their lives. The General Social Sur- vey has been tracking trends in religious pref- erence since 1972. In 1972, only 5 percent of the Ameri- can population answered “no reli- gion.” In 2012, 40 years after that first survey, the number is now 20 percent and steadily rising. continued on page 8 This decline in religious interest leads to the sec- ond reality, which is that mainline Christianity is at a critical juncture. Every 500 years the church undergoes a reformation, and the church is cur- rently in the midst of being re- formed into something new. Even though this is an exciting time for many in the church, because our church denomination was the product of the last reformation, our version of Christianity has seen its peak and is now on its way to- wards extinction. We can see evi- dence for this all around us as churches that were once thriving in our community are now on the brink of having to close their doors from lack of membership. We’re moving in a different direction at First Pres. Session Highlights by Tom Pardo, Clerk of Session Discussed Session’s response to the recent General Assembly vote to have the PC(USA) divest investment holdings in three companies—Motorola Solu- tions, Hewlett Packard, and Caterpillar—because of their supplier relationships with the Israeli Defense Forces. Learned about a major under- taking to review and update the membership rolls by the pastors and a small work group from the Congregational and Com- munity Life Committee. Approved a distribution from the Endowment Fund distribut- able funds of $11,200 for the purpose of making repairs at Door 9. Approved a first-ever Branding Policy for First Presbyterian Church.
