The deadline for the October 2014 issue of The Chimes is September 15 at 9:00 am. Submit articles to Kris Mainellis, director of communications, at krismainellis@fpcah.org. 2 Welcome, Adrienne Trevathan! New Director of Children’s Ministries by Kris Mainellis Rev. Adrienne Trevathan began serving as director of children’s ministries on August 11. Since her arrival, she has been busy growing acclimated to the church, meeting new people, and preparing for the new educational year at First Pres. Adrienne’s gifts for children’s edu- cation and program administration make her well suited to provide leadership, vision, and support for the Christian faith formation of First Pres children from birth through fifth grade. She will design and implement edu- cational programs for Sunday morning, midweek ministry, and special events. Adrienne is excited to share ministry with First Pres families and she sees her primary goal as “creating safe and forma- tive space for children to under- stand how God’s story relates to their stories.” Adrienne was raised outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent her teenage and college years in western Tennes- see. Although new to the Arlington Heights area, she is not new to Illi- nois. “I’ve been in the Chicago area for 8 years now, and I’m still thrilled that I get to live in such a great area,” she enthuses. Adrienne holds a bachelor of arts degree in English and religion from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee, and she earned her mas- ter of divinity from Garrett- Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, where she is currently completing her master of arts degree in Christian education. She is a clergywoman of the United Methodist Church (UMC) and serves as a provisional deacon in the Northern Illinois Conference of the UMC. continued on page 11 Adrienne is particularly interest- ed in focusing on the role of faith and practice in children’s ministry—“exploring the joys of teaching and walking with First Presbyterian as we ask what’s next for creating a more vital and life- giving educational environment for kids.” She is excited to explore cre- ative faith-formation practices with families so that families of all ages can learn and grow together as dis- ciples more intentionally. Adrienne is a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam nation, a Native American tribe in Kingston, Wash- ington (“across the water from Se- attle,” she explains). “I visit my family on our reservation as often as I can, and I love taking part in the ‘family trade’ of digging clams, picking oysters, going crabbing, and participating, when possible, in Session Highlights by Tom Pardo, Clerk of Session Agreed to defer action on same- sex marriage ceremonies taking place at First Presbyterian Church because Session needs more time for prayer and dis- cernment, especially at a time when church leaders and the congregation will focus more attention on the vision for the church. Session will revisit this matter in October to determine what action, if any, it wishes to take at that time. Learned that work is being un- dertaken on the formation of a Christian education coordinat- ing team that would help align activities and improve commu- nication between children’s and youth education endeavors. The Children’s Ministries and Youth Ministries Committees would be retained, but would send repre- sentatives to serve as liaisons on the new coordinating team. Received a revision to the Un- designated Gift Policy for a first reading. Additional information pertaining to the wording and context of the policy is being sought before Session takes action on the revision. Learned that Session will discuss in September the recent action From the August 11, 2014, meeting: taken by the General Assembly regarding divestment from three companies supplying military- related equipment, products, and services to Israel. Approved a motion establishing new criteria regarding setting term limits for all Session committees, with term lengths being limited to one, two, or three years, depending on the committee, and prohibiting committee members from serv- ing more than six consecutive years before taking a one-year sabbatical.
