PAGE 2 RMA CONCERT BAND NEWSLETTER 17 l DECEMBER 2014 Lara Jelliff takes up the story: Saturday 2nd August was marked by a very early start for the band. However, despite the fact most players had risen substantially before 5am to arrive at Worcester Cathedral in time for a rehearsal prior to the concert, the band performed with definite regal finesse. Once again, under David Cole’s baton, a majestic opening comprising the overture for Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music followed by Stanley’s Trumpet Voluntary played by Jon Yates, sensitively backed by the rest of the band, provided a fitting choice within such an imposing setting. Similarly, well appreciated by the notably sizeable audience, was the contrast once again provided by the Innsworth Military Wives Choir and the magnificence of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 . On the journey back my own personal treat: the dulcet harmonies of the band returning to Eastney by coach in a verse of Happy Birthday – perhaps not quite matching the quality of the exquisite music of our concert but a nice and well-appreciated touch: very many thanks gentlemen and ladies! One of David’s last major gigs with us was at Winhester cathedral in early October. This concert was given in response to the Lord Lieutenant’s Appeal for the cathedral’s restoration programme. The band opened appropriately with music from WW1, Take Me Back To Dear Old Blighty! , quickly followed by Principal Trumpet Jon Yates’s excellent playing of Hamlisch’s Through The Eyes of Love which, like many other pieces played during the evening, sounded quite magnificent.
