INTERFACE NATIONAL NEWSLETTER— OCTOBER 2014 PAGE 2 We were very proud when Unathi Mtholo, a partic- ipant in our Communication Circle, and Pree Pa- rumaul were invited to the Annual Price Giving Ceremony held on the 24 April 2014 at Sisizakele Special School. Unathi spoke on communication as our basic right and Pree spoke on Madiba's legacy, namely that "all disabled children are enti- tled to a bright and exciting future", focusing on AAC principles. The function and price giving cer- emony was centred around "20 years into Democ- racy". We are happy to say that we continue to receive funding in support of this very worthwhile group, which meets monthly at our centre. Our much anticipated Pre-school/Toddler Com- munication Circle met for the first time on the 3rd April 2014 and now takes place regularly once a month on a Tuesday morning. The group is run by Avishana Sewrajan and currently includes 3 participants from ages 3 to 7 years, and currently all parents attend with their children. The group is mixed, with children who have diagnoses of cer- ebral and down syndrome. All participating chil- dren use AAC systems that include low and high technology, including picture communication boards, switches to access Communicator on the laptop and direct access on iPad using Sonoflex. The abilities of the children are varied with re- gards to their independence when using their communication system, however all the children have consolidated that they need to use their AAC systems to communicate. They are a group of mo- tivated, feisty, little people with equally motivated and resilient parents. None of the children are currently enrolled in formal school settings and are therefore most curious about each other. The first session was more about becoming familiar and being aware about being in a group. By the second session the challenges with regards to behaviour and awareness of social communica- tion began to emerge…much to surprise of the parents. However everyone acknowledged that this highlights the need for the group. The focus of the group is to have FUN, while using AAC. The parents have established a supportive rela- tionship, one which often leads to discussions on real issues, such as schools, caregivers, and the importance of moving themselves and their chil- dren out of their comfort zones. It has also been a forum for parents to voice similar feelings of injus- tice and to celebrate achievements that everyone else may view as inconsequential. A spin off of this group is that a book library is now being set up for the group. Interface has successfully hosted 3 Journal Club meetings, with 4 participating therapists from the private sector and from schools, in addition to Jocelyn, Pree and Avishana. The club has gener- ated stimulating discussion around issues pertain- ing to AAC practice with review of articles, as well as clarifications regarding therapy approaches etc used in AAC therapy. The Journal Club is being coordinated and hosted by Interface KZN to pro- vide a forum for professionals and AAC practition- ers interested in the field of AAC to meet regularly for sharing of information, case discussions and review and demonstration of equipment. The club has also created an environment for developing networks to refer clients to. We have also man- aged to successfully obtain accreditation with SASLHA. Our isiZulu project is ongoing, and the current fo- cus is on creating awareness of the resources that have been created through much hard work and effort by Jocelyn. At the CP Conference which took place at Spes Nova School in May 2014, Jocelyn put together isiZulu sample packs, con- sisting of isiZulu communication boards, symbol stories, a training dvd etc. The pack was very well received by everyone at the Conference, and will now be marketed at all schools and organi- zations in need of intro- duction to AAC. It should be emphasised that all resources are readily available for free download on our website. Please contact Trudi at our centre, should you wish to find out more about the sample packs. Interface KZN most recently presented a work- shop on the 25 & 26th of July: “The Art and Sci- ence of Inclusion & Evaluation”. Presenters were Margi Lilienfeld and Jocelyn Mngomezulu. The workshop was well attended and received positive feedback overall. Felicity Jonck Interface KZN Interface Branch News News from Interface KZN
