I you have specifc questions about CCSS, please contact Emily Atkinson at eatkinson@raleighchamber.org or John Johnston at jjohnston@raleighchamber.org. An Update on the Common Core in North Carolina In June, the NC General Assembly passed two unique versions o anti-Common Core legislation. In the House, approved legislation would repeal the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and math entirely. It also creates a review commission to study various educational standards and make a recommendation to the State Board o Education on new standards or our public schools. The Senate drated a very similar bill; however, there is one key dierence. The House version bars the review commission rom considering Common Core during their standards review. The Senate version would allow or a review o all education standards, creating the option o retaining the Common Core i they are ound to be “most aligned to assess student achievement.” Currently, the House and Senate working out dierences in the two versions in a conerence committee. At the time o this publication, we do not know what the uture o the Common Core looks like in our state. We do know that Gov. Pat McCrory, the North Carolina Chamber o Commerce, and the Greater Raleigh Chamber all support the Senate’s version o the Common Core legislation. By supporting the Senate’s version, which allows the Common Core to be studied as a potential educational standard, we can ensure our students are well-prepared to enter the workorce.
