FIRST COMES LOVE is a celebration of enduring relationships in the LGBTQ community. Through a series of moving black-and-white portraits and accompanying stories, B. Proud illuminates the real lives of over 60 couples who have been together from between 10 to 59 years. Begun at a time when same-sex marriage was in its infancy in the United States and the Defense of Marriage Act was the law of the land, these portraits show the deep-seated love between couples who have long considered themselves committed. Gathered here is a diverse collection of LGBTQ couples, including the California Proposition 8 Plaintiffs, Edie Windsor, the rst couple married in the nation’s capital, the Mayor of Houston, gay pioneers Barbara Gittings, Kay Lahusen, and Lilli Vincenz, and many more. Breaking down the stereotypes of a community typically characterized by rainbow ags and gay pride parades, these portraits ask us to look beyond the surface and beyond the labels and see the true nature of these people who are deeply in love. While there is no single perfect recipe for a perfect relationship, First Comes Love is like an amazing cookbook with delicious recipes that have survived for many years. We are delighted to know that we will be a part of the collection of couples showcased in a book like First Comes Love . These are unions that have survived prior to marriage equity or religious sanctions; we are couples who have survived because of our unconditional love and unwavering commitment to each other; we are couples who defined for ourselves the morals and terms of our relationship. Readers of First Comes Love will see reflected the diversity of couples within the LGBTQ community. —Chris and ABilly, together 36 years When I first saw these portraits a few years ago, it seemed a beautiful, thoughtful, but ultimately quixotic project—the larger world just didn’t seem to care too much about love between same-sex couples. Yet now it seems that Barbara Proud was the prescient one. The tide of history has moved swiftly, bringing astounding changes, all very much influenced by a broader appreciation for long-term love and commitment in the LGBTQ community. With these portraits, Proud has captured the human component of a remarkable period of social transformation. —Martin H. McNamara Director, Gallery 339
