Page 2 BIOGRAPHY Blake was born in London, England in the year 1757. Being mostly home schooled by his Chrisan mother, the Bible had a large inuence on his life and thoughts, which is reected in his works, which contain very spiritual themes. At an early age, Blake began experiencing visions. Allegedly, Blake saw God ’ s head appear in his window at the age of four years old.. He also supposedly saw the prophet Ezekiel sing under a tree full of angels. These visions went on to heavily inuence his works of art and literature. During his teenage years, Blake ’ s arsc ability became apparent. He was en- rolled in a drawing school at age 10 and became an engraver at age 21. Blake ’ s brother, Robert passed away from tuberculosis. At the moment of his death, Blake allegedly saw his spirit joyously rise up into the heavens, this vi- sion deeply touched Blake and signicantly inuenced his later works. A year later, Blake ’ s brother supposedly appeared to him again and suggested a new method of prinng, which Blake incorporated into many of his arsc works. In 1804, Blake started wring ‘ Jerusalem ’, his most ambious poem to date, protesng against the industrial revoluon. However, this poem was met with several crical reviews, one which accused Blake of being an ‘ unfortunate lu- nac ’. Blake was devastated by the recepon that the poem received, and began to abandon any hope of success, releasing very few more works com- mercially, as he began to sink into anxiety and poverty. Blake sadly died on the 12th of August, 1827 of an undiagnosed disease, leav- ing several unnished works. Although Blake was largely unappreciated during his lifeme, he has since become one of the most widely recognised protest poets of all me. Many of his works have remained famous throughout me, and the fact that ‘ Jerusalem ’ has since become known as England ’ s unocial anthem is testa- ment to this. William Blake (November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet , painter and printmaker. Although Blake was mostly unappreciated in his lifeme, he is now recognised as one of the greatest protest poets of all me and an integral gure in the Romanc move- ment.
