Cake maker rises to the challenge A locally amous cake decorator is planning on opening her rst shop in Sheeld. Rachel Edwards (38) rom Greystones, Sheeld, is a cake decorator with great ambitions on opening a new shop that would sell cake making equipment and some o her own creations such as cookies and cupcakes. Rachel has built her status up in Sheeld back when she rst started to bake cakes around 15 years ago, she recently decided her next step in her cake decorating career was to open the upcoming shop ‘Oh Sugar’ on Sharrow Vale Road in Sheeld. Rachel said: “I wanted to pursue a career path in cake bak- ing but running a business at home has become harder or me over the years as I wasn’t earning nearly as much as my amily needed. “Also now my eldest is old enough to look aer my other son it means I can work away rom home.” At ‘Oh Sugar’, Rachel also will be selling cake parapher- nalia and her bespoke cakes. She will also be hosting cake decorating courses or anyone interested in learning some techniques. Rachel has eatured in a lot o leading National wedding magazines such as the ‘Cosmopolitan Bride’, ‘You and Your Wedding’ and ‘Perect Wedding’. She also appears as a reg- ular on Radio Sheeld and assists in the talk shows on the station. Rachel has been making a variety o cakes since the start o her career in this business including a Gothic wedding cake that she nds the weirdest cake she has made to date; Rachel said “Te couple wanted to hide their Goth side rom their grandparents so they incorporated a traditional cake with secret gothic eatures. “Te cake was white and had several spiders webs embel- lished on the sides o the cake; on each web was a tiny white spider. “Tere was also a small collection o white sugar roses in bud orm on the top o the cake, with one open rose. In the centre o the rose was a sugar skull, which was not visible rom a distance.” Rachel’s best memory o her career was when she achieved her rst national magazine eature. Rachel said: “I rushed to WHsmith and bought a copy, I was so proud o mysel!” Although Rachel hasn’t appeared on any baking related tele- vision programmes, she appeared on a ew episodes o ‘Deal or no Deal’ where she unortunately le dealing at 17p. Rachel does however say: “Tough I have not had the chance to be on any television programs as o yet, I’d love to have a go!” She was also asked i given an opportunity whether or not she would appear on ‘Te Great British Bake Of’. o which she replied “No I’d hate it! I don’t actually like the baking part, so I could think o nothing worse.
