Harley models her mother’s designs at Norton College TV Studio 1 V ersatile and trendy dress designs for women are to be released from a Shefeld designer. In November 2013 Anna Roberts and her mod- els will be hitting the catwalk on Ecclesall Road with some modern and edgy dress designs all handmade by Anna herself. Since leaving school Anna has never been inter- ested in anything apart from designing cloth- ing, mainly for the female buyers. The designer (47) from Gleadless, said: “I take inspiration from the things that I would wear. I design things that I think I would be comforta- ble in.” Since being very young Anna has always had an interest in designing, from the age of ve she was able to knit and by the time she was 11 she had made her rst garment. Over a Caribbean cuisine, Anna said that the best part of her job was seeing the nal design being worn and being pleased with the out- come. The designer said that she takes inspiration from every designer as well as looking at the demographics of certain items that are in trend for the seasons. She added: “One of my favourite couture de- signers has always been Chanel; she was quite revolutionary for her time. She did something different with women’s clothes.” Chanel was a label founded in 1909 by Coco Chanel who created haute couture and ready to wear designs that changed the way women dress through the 20th century. The 80s was an inspiring decade for Anna too, producing designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and a company that created Lycra clothing with edgy cuts and shapes called Body Map. Despite the fact that the fashion industry re- mains to be rather competitive Anna appears to be quite successful. A lot of young students think that designing clothes is just sketching out a pretty picture on a piece of paper but no, employers look for a technical hand who is handy on a sewing ma- chine. Anna’s advice for students studying fashion today is: “You must be able to construct and cut garments because if you just think that you are going to sit there and draw it, you are not and you will never get a job by doing that .” Anna’s designs are sexy and full of attitude but still they show a touch of class and elegance. Anna’s daughter, Harley (17) who models for her mum said: “My favourite dress is the wrap around dress in black because it is very versa- tile, it’s good for a lot of occasions and it can be worn in different ways.” Harley has had a great experience in model- ling for her mum; she has done seven fashion shows. Anna’s job is very hectic; she is on the phone to clients a lot of the time and spends many hours in front of a sewing machine. Despite all this, the results are rewarding.
